Introduction:
AFN nitrogen gas generators are the ideal source of nitrogen
gas for instrument purge, nebulising gas, chemical and solvent
blanketing. Nitrogen gas generators eliminate the need for costly,
inconvenient high-pressure cylinders. They include an integral
oil-free compressor as standard; the generator delivers a continuous
stream of 99.999% pure nitrogen gas with residual oxygen content
of less than 10 ppm without the need for secondary rification.
The technology involved in providing a continual stream of high
purity nitrogen is pressure swing adsorption (PSA). This technique
uses a bed of carbon molecular sieve (CMS) to selectively remove
oxygen and other contaminants from atmospheric air. The bed alternates
between purification and regeneration modes to ensure continuous
nitrogen production. This filtered compressed air stream is then
passed to the CMS bed currently in purification mode. Whilst passing
through the bed, the oxygen, carbon dioxide, moisture and some
hydrocarbons are removed from the compressed air, resulting in
a product stream of clean, dry, high purity nitrogen gas. Generators
producing high purity nitrogen and air use the same PSA principle,
using an additional bed of activated alumina for air purification.
